Enjoying the Holidays | Sandpoint and Coeur d’Alene

Northern Idaho is known for its surplus of summer activities. Between many hikes and five major lakes within two hours of each other, a summer season spent far north is hard to beat. Yet, as great as the summers in Idaho are, the winter holiday season takes first place in the hearts of many locals.

The Coeur d’Alene Resort specializes in Christmas festivities, and Schweitzer Ski Resort, based in Sandpoint, is the go-to place to ring in the New Year. No matter where you call home, Northern Idaho will become your personal North Pole with its fresh snow and pine trees! Here is a glimpse into the best ways to spend your holiday season this year in Sandpoint and Coeur d’Alene.

Celebrate with the Whole Family on a Christmas Lake Cruise

As you drive into downtown Coeur d’Alene, you can see that the Coeur d’Alene Resort is the heart of CDA. It sits right on the lake in the middle of downtown and hosts many community events.

One of the things that the Coeur d’Alene Resort is best known for in the Inland Northwest is their famous Journey to the North Pole Cruises. During the entire month of December, take the whole family on a 40-minute holiday cruise on Lake Coeur d’Alene, where you finish by meeting Santa himself! With around 1.5 million Christmas lights, this cruise is enjoyable for the entire family and a fantastic way to celebrate Christmas.

Ring in the New Year on the Mountain

Schweitzer Ski Resort is the secret gem of the Inland Northwest and has plenty to do in the village on the mountain’s base to ring in 2022—no ski skills needed! Schweitzer’s Taps Bar will be hosting an NYE celebration (21+) full of live music, free late-night snacks, and a champagne toast at midnight to say goodbye to 2021. The party will be held on the entire top level of the Lakeview lodge, adequately named as you can see Lake Pend Oreille from the base of Schweitzer!

Purchase tickets here and ring in 2022 with drinks, music, and friends! Goodbye, 2021!

Warm Up with A Drink: Après-ski with a View

Nothing is better when finishing a long day of laps on the mountain than a warm cocktail by the fireplace. The drink tastes even better when you are overlooking the largest lake in the state of Idaho and as far north as Canada—sound too good to be true? Not at Schweitzer’s Sky House on the Summit, located at the top of the Great Escape Quad chairlift!

The Nest, the Sky House’s sit-down restaurant, has a menu full of small plates, local beer and wine, and house-made cocktails such as hot toddies and boozy hot chocolate. The Sky House is one of the most desirable recent additions to Schweitzer’s expanding resort. Get out of the cold and enjoy a cocktail before your last run of the day.

The best part of being this far north in Idaho’s panhandle is that winter doesn’t end in January! The holiday spirit feels alive until the snow melts up in Sandpoint and Coeur d’Alene, so grab a cocktail, put your skis on, and enjoy the snow for a little longer!
